UN report exposes gender-based violence against women in Gaza, forced marriages and trafficking for food

The United Nations has revealed alarming levels of gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls in Gaza, including forced marriages with rapists and cases of women being traded for food and basic supplies within their communities.
According to UNFPA's quarterly report on GBV trends, reported incidents increased 27% between April and June 2026 compared to the previous quarter. The most common forms of violence documented were denial of resources and opportunities (32.7%), psychological and emotional violence (30.9%), and forced and early marriage. Women aged 18-59 were identified as most vulnerable.
The report, based on data from 10 partner organisations, noted that survivors face life-threatening consequences including severe emotional trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and suicidal thoughts. Ongoing displacement and deteriorating living conditions have heightened women's vulnerability to GBV.
