UP Bridge Collapse Tragedy: Under-Construction Betwa River Bridge Crashes During Storm, Five Dead In Hamirpur

A major tragedy unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district after a section of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed during a powerful storm, killing at least five workers and leaving several others injured. Rescue teams fear that more labourers could still be trapped beneath the debris.
The accident took place at the Kandaur-Morakandar bridge project in the Kurara police station area when strong winds and severe weather battered the construction site late at night. Officials said a slab, pier section and supporting scaffolding structure suddenly gave way while workers were present beneath the bridge.
Panic spread across the area as the massive concrete structure crashed down, burying several labourers under rubble and twisted metal. Local residents and construction workers rushed to help before emergency teams arrived at the spot.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force, local police and district administration immediately launched rescue operations and began removing debris in search of trapped workers. Senior officials, including police and administrative officers, remained stationed at the accident site to supervise the operation.
Authorities said multiple injured workers were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, while rescue personnel continued combing through the collapsed structure amid fears that casualties could rise.
Reacting to the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths and directed officials to speed up rescue and relief work.
The Chief Minister instructed the administration to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and ordered compensation for the families of those killed in the collapse. He also asked senior officials to stay in constant touch with the affected families and extend all possible assistance.
