4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chamoli, Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Tuesday night, with tremors felt across the Delhi-NCR region. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake had a depth of 13 kilometres and was characterized as reviewed.
The tremor adds to a series of seismic events experienced in the Delhi-NCR region this year. In January, a mild 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck New Delhi with its epicentre in North Delhi at a shallow depth of about five kilometres, causing brief tremors but no reported damage. In April, tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR following a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan near Darawan, with mild shaking also reported in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kargil. A stronger 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on June 27, causing tremors in Delhi-NCR and northern India, with a depth of approximately 215 kilometres.
No immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have been reported from the Chamoli earthquake. The National Disaster Management Authority recommends staying indoors, dropping to the floor and taking shelter under sturdy furniture during earthquake tremors, and remaining inside until shaking stops completely.
