West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari announces relief for Kurmi community, excludes them from UCC

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Sunday that cases filed against members of the Kurmi community by the previous government during violent protests last year will be withdrawn. Speaking at a Kurmi Karam festival event in Purulia's Karadi ground, Adhikari said the community was excluded from the Uniform Civil Code's scope at the representatives' request.
Adhikari criticized the previous government for dividing the Kurmi community and failing to fulfil promises. He accused it of using police force during the September 2025 protests, when the community demanded Scheduled Tribe status for the district. The current BJP government, he said, will honour the party's pre-election commitments to the community.
