White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Fired After Five Days in Role

Katie Zacharia, 41, was dismissed from her role as White House press secretary on Friday, October 16, in an unusual manner. While conducting an interview with The Wall Street Journal at her West Wing desk, she was called away by President Donald Trump's senior adviser Jason Miller, who said Vice President JD Vance wanted to meet with her. She left the interview and did not return, marking the end of her brief tenure.
President Trump had already expressed doubts about Zacharia's commitment to the role earlier that day. When speaking to reporters as he departed for Georgia, Trump revealed he had questioned her about whether she truly wanted the job, suggesting he had advised her to reconsider. These remarks indicated concerns about her future in the administration even before her formal dismissal.
Zacharia's first appearance at the White House briefing room on Tuesday had drawn criticism for her heavy reliance on prepared notes and her response to only three questions, all from media outlets viewed as friendly to the administration. In her defence, she later told the Journal she had been given minimal time to prepare for the briefing.
