WTO Director General can perform depositary functions: Organisation tells India

The WTO has responded to India's legal queries regarding the Director General's assignment as depositary of the Interim Arrangements for the Agreement on Electronic Commerce (ECA). The organisation stated that serving as depositary of the ECA would not create a conflict with the chief's existing role and responsibilities.
India had raised questions about the legal basis for this dual responsibility. The WTO's clarification suggests that the depositary function—which typically involves holding and administering agreement documents—can be performed alongside the DG's regular duties without compromising either role.
