Can You Do Yoga During Your Periods? Experts Share Guidance

As International Yoga Day approaches, discussions around mindful wellness and listening to one's body are gaining attention. Many women question whether they should continue yoga during menstruation. While periods often bring cramps, fatigue and mood swings, experts say the right kind of yoga can help ease discomfort and promote relaxation.
Dr. Sabrina Bokil, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at Jupiter Hospital Pune, says there is no fixed rule against exercising during periods, but women should monitor their energy levels and avoid pushing through pain. Some yoga instructors recommend avoiding inversions like headstands during menstruation, though scientific evidence remains limited. Dr. Archana Dhawan Bajaj, a gynaecologist and IVF expert, advises women with severe symptoms—heavy bleeding, dizziness or conditions like endometriosis—to consult healthcare professionals before vigorous exercise.
