Cloudy Water In Oxygen Humidifier Raises Safety Concerns At Beed Hospital

Patient safety concerns have emerged at Beed District Hospital after heavily cloudy water was detected in an oxygen humidifier bottle used in the semi-ICU ward. A patient developed respiratory distress during transit, and hospital staff discovered the discoloured water in the humidifier. Following protests, staff replaced the unit before resuming oxygen administration.
Social activist Dr Ganesh Dhawale has filed a formal complaint with Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar and District Guardian Minister Sunetra Pawar, demanding an immediate inquiry. The complaint seeks microbiological testing of water samples and inspection of all oxygen delivery equipment, including humidifier bottles and tubing.
Medical protocols require sterile distilled water and rigorous disinfection for oxygen humidification systems. Experts warn that contaminated water can lead to biofilm formation and spread harmful pathogens into patients' respiratory tracts, particularly endangering critically ill individuals.
