Maharashtra Politics Erupts Over Manoj Jarange's ₹500 Crore Audio Clip; BJP Claims AI Manipulation, Shiv Sena Demands Probe

A purported audio clip released by Maratha activist Manoj Jarange on Thursday has strained ties between the ruling partners Shiv Sena and BJP. In the clip, alleged BJP leaders are heard saying that Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde paid Rs 500 crore to Jarange through his MP son Shrikant. The Shiv Sena has demanded a thorough inquiry, while the BJP says the clip was generated using artificial intelligence and has called for an investigation into its authenticity.
Jarange alleged that a conspiracy had been hatched to silence him and weaken his agitation for Maratha reservation. He played the recording at a press conference and demanded a probe to establish the identities of the speakers. He said the conversation reflected the thinking of those opposed to his agitation and to issues concerning farmers and the poor, and vowed to continue his fight.
The recording reportedly dates back to October 2014, a few days before the Assembly elections, and purportedly discusses whether Jarange's influence could benefit the party and how his support in the Marathwada region could be countered. Jarange warned that ruling parties could face consequences in the 2029 Assembly elections if they failed to respond to his demands.
Shiv Sena leaders alleged the recording was part of a conspiracy to defame Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Industry Minister Uday Samant claimed the voices belonged to BJP leaders and sought a forensic examination. BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar, whose voice is allegedly in the clip, said it was AI-generated and needs investigation. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule asked Jarange to file a formal complaint and assured an impartial inquiry if evidence is submitted.
