Mumbai's First 20 AC Local Rakes Expected by December 2027; Later Batches to Include Upgraded Features

The first 20 of 238 planned AC local trains for Mumbai are expected to arrive by December 2027, following the design of existing AC locals on the suburban network. The remaining 218 rakes will incorporate passenger-friendly modifications including cushioned seats, improved mobile charging facilities, and upgraded HVAC systems.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation recently signed an MoU with Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, for the procurement and production of all 238 AC EMU rakes. Manufacturing will be divided among three Railway production units: Integral Coach Factory will produce 120 rakes, Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala will make 71, and Modern Coach Factory Raebareli will manufacture 47. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the entire order targeted for completion by 2030.
