BMC To Install IoT Ultrasonic Meters At 31 Water Filling Centres To Track Tanker Supply

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is installing IoT-based ultrasonic water meters at 31 round-the-clock filling centres across Mumbai to strengthen oversight of its tanker-filling network. Water-dispatch data will be automatically transmitted to the BMC's Aqua Server every 15 minutes, enabling near real-time tracking of supplies.
The move addresses critical shortcomings in the BMC's six-year-old mechanical metering system. Though 64 meters installed in 2019 remain functional, water dispatched to tankers continues to be logged manually at local reservoirs. During the 2026 summer water shortage, dependence on tanker supplies surged significantly between February and May, exposing gaps in water accounting.
Ultrasonic meters, with no moving parts, can handle higher flow rates during peak demand periods and require minimal maintenance. The BMC expects them to have a service life exceeding 10 years, making them more cost-efficient than conventional mechanical meters while delivering improved accuracy and durability.
