Bombay HC Slams Mumbai University Over Law College Affiliation Delays

The Bombay High Court on Thursday pulled up the University of Mumbai for delays in processing law college affiliation applications. A bench of Justices Riyaz Chagla and Farhan Dubash heard petitions by law colleges challenging the university's decision to reduce student intake and impose penalties over alleged deficiencies.
Colleges argued they had appointed faculty meeting Bar Council of India norms, but the university delayed approvals despite applications pending since 2025. Justice Dubash questioned whether the university had any timeline to decide applications, observing that timelines should apply equally to the institution. The court noted that colleges cannot be held guilty of non-compliance if the university fails to respond promptly to requests.
The university's counsel submitted that timelines existed under regulations and BCI framework. The bench also questioned why penalties were imposed in July when deficiencies were known since December 2025.
