Congress, NCP (SP) Explore Merger Amid MVA Challenges; Talks Underway In Maharashtra

The Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) have reportedly initiated discussions over a possible merger, a move that could significantly reshape Maharashtra's opposition politics if it receives approval from the leadership of both parties.
According to sources, the talks are currently centred on the Maharashtra units of the Congress and NCP (SP). Leaders are said to be working towards building consensus within the party before taking the proposal to the national leadership for a final decision.
Sources indicated that once discussions at the state level are completed, the proposal is expected to be placed before the top leadership in New Delhi, where any final decision on a merger would be taken.
The idea of bringing both parties together is not new. Similar discussions had taken place ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, but those deliberations were reportedly put on hold as political parties shifted their focus to the election campaign.
The renewed talks come at a time when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance is facing political challenges and internal uncertainty. The opposition alliance has witnessed significant developments in recent months, including the exit of six Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (UBT), who later joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Questions over the unity of the MVA have also surfaced publicly. During a recent meeting of alliance leaders in Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray openly expressed concerns about the coalition's cohesion, highlighting the need for greater unity among its partners.
The latest discussions also carry historical significance. Sharad Pawar parted ways with the Congress in 1999 to establish the Nationalist Congress Party, creating one of Maharashtra's most influential regional political parties.
More recently, the NCP witnessed another major split in 2023, when Ajit Pawar led a separate faction into the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, resulting in two rival groups claiming the party's legacy.
Despite speculation over political realignments, the Sharad Pawar-led faction had earlier ruled out any possibility of reuniting with Ajit Pawar's camp, maintaining that both groups now follow different political paths.
While discussions between the Congress and NCP (SP) are still at a preliminary stage, political observers believe that any decision on a merger could have a major impact on Maharashtra's opposition landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
