Dharavi Redevelopment Project Defends Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi Demolitions, Says Due Process Followed

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project has rejected claims of illegal evictions in Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi, stating that the demolition drive on August 6 adhered to all legal requirements. The agency cited public notices issued in April, individual vacation notices, and hearings for objecting residents on July 6 and 13, with demolition notices displayed on July 28.
Of 16 identified hutments, 12 residents vacated voluntarily after counselling. Only four structures required police assistance after occupants repeatedly declined to comply with notices. The DRP said the action was necessary for railway and public infrastructure works on Mahim and Matunga railway lands as a prerequisite for rehabilitation construction.
The agency maintained that the rehabilitation process prioritised protecting eligible residents' rights while ensuring timely project execution.
