GRP Personnel Allegedly Conduct Unauthorised Searches Without CCTV at Mumbai Railway Stations

Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel are allegedly violating established guidelines by conducting passenger searches at spots without CCTV coverage across Mumbai railway stations. An inspection found passengers being taken to GRP rooms, under-staircase areas, and other locations lacking surveillance at Borivli, Mumbai Central, and Bandra stations.
Official guidelines require all inspections to be recorded under CCTV, conducted in the presence of senior officers, and restricted to police stations or posts. However, several locations including the crime detection room at Mumbai Central Terminus and rooms at CSMT lack functional cameras. A passenger from Rajasthan reported being extorted of ₹30,000 at Mumbai Central after GRP personnel discovered cash and gold, and subsequently faced similar uncorded checks at other stations.
Recent months have seen 13 GRP personnel suspended within five months in 2025 for passenger extortion allegations, and additional constables suspended for assisting gutkha suppliers in 2026.
