Maharashtra launches drive against out-of-state vehicles used beyond 12 months

The Maharashtra Transport Department will conduct a special enforcement drive from October 5 to 17 to identify private vehicles registered in other states that are being regularly used in Maharashtra for more than a year. The initiative aims to address concerns that vehicle owners are registering their vehicles outside the state to avoid Maharashtra's higher motor vehicle tax.
Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, vehicles registered in one state can be used in another for up to 12 months. Beyond that, owners must apply for re-registration and pay applicable tax. Transport Commissioner Rajesh Narwekar has directed all Regional Transport Offices to conduct verification. Vehicles found in violation may face detention, re-registration and tax recovery.
Enforcement teams will be deployed at metropolitan areas, industrial zones, commercial and residential complexes, and parking facilities. Officials will examine documents and evidence to establish how long out-of-state vehicles have been operating in Maharashtra. Daily reports will be submitted to the Transport Commissioner.
