Maharashtra Drought Relief Likely After Diwali As Crop Damage Surveys Underway

Farmers in drought-affected parts of Maharashtra may have to wait until after Diwali to receive financial relief, as the state government completes crop damage assessments. Marathwada, parts of Vidarbha and middle districts facing rainfall deficits have seen damage to kharif crops including soybean, cotton, tur, moong and urad.
The state's Agriculture, Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation departments will conduct crop damage assessments across affected areas. Since the kharif season ends on October 31, the extent of crop losses will be assessed more accurately after that date, following which relief quantum will be determined and assistance released in phases.
The state is also expected to seek financial assistance from the Centre. Meanwhile, rainfall in late September and early October will be crucial for rabi sowing and water storage in dams and irrigation projects.
