Maharashtra Plans Roadside Drug Testing System for Drivers

Maharashtra's Transport Department is preparing a proposal for a roadside drug testing system to detect motorists driving under the influence of narcotics or psychotropic substances. The system would use swab-based kits for preliminary screening, with results available within minutes. This addresses a current gap where suspected drug-impaired drivers must undergo time-consuming medical examinations and laboratory tests.
Unlike drunk-driving cases, Maharashtra lacks comprehensive state-level data on drugged driving incidents, making enforcement and assessment difficult. A high-powered committee has previously sought detailed review of existing legal provisions, study of practices in other states, and input from the Public Health Department before final approval.
The preliminary swab test would serve as initial screening only. Drivers testing positive would then undergo prescribed medical examinations and legal procedures as per existing protocols.
