Maharashtra to launch first state data centre policy to regulate pollution and resource use

Maharashtra is set to become the first state with a dedicated Data Centre Policy governing digital infrastructure facilities. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has partnered with IIT Bombay to develop Standard Operating Procedures addressing siting, environmental impact, and resource consumption concerns.
The policy follows strong local opposition in Thane's Balkum area against a proposed AWS data centre over noise pollution, heat generation, and resource diversion fears. MPCB chairman Siddhesh Kadam said the framework aims to balance environmental protection with attracting investment to the state.
The SOPs will mandate buffer zones around residential areas, encourage facilities away from densely populated zones, and address high water consumption through recycled water use. The policy is expected to be finalised within months.
