Maharashtra Extends Marathi Learning Deadline for Non-Marathi Auto, Taxi Drivers by One Year

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a one-year extension for non-Marathi-speaking auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers to learn basic Marathi, suspending enforcement action during the grace period. The decision followed a meeting with driver union representatives, including Haji Arfat Shaikh, who requested additional time to meet the language requirement.
The state government had initially announced the Marathi mandate in April with an August 15 deadline. After Transport Department checks on August 20 issued notices to 1,268 drivers, unions appealed for more time. Fadnavis said the government recognised drivers supported the policy but needed extended timeframes.
Driver organisations have committed to arranging Marathi classes during the extension period. No enforcement action will be taken against drivers during this one-year window.
