Maharashtra passes bill to recognize women farmers independently

Maharashtra has passed the Women Farmers' Empowerment Bill, which grants women independent recognition as farmers irrespective of land ownership. The legislation addresses long-standing structural biases against female agricultural workers in the state.
The bill highlights the need for a comprehensive database of women farmers to ensure they can access welfare schemes and government support programmes. Experts note that many women engaged in farming lack formal recognition, limiting their eligibility for subsidies, credit facilities and other agricultural benefits.
The move aims to bridge the gap between women's participation in farming and their access to resources, bringing greater visibility to the female agricultural workforce.
