Marathi Theatre: A Legacy of Innovation From Ancient Times to Modernity

Theatre in India has ancient roots, with the Sanskrit treatise 'Natya Shastra' (200 BCE–200 CE) serving as a foundational text. Maharashtra's Satavahana Dynasty inscriptions from the 1st century CE mention dramatic performances, underscoring the region's long theatrical heritage. Folk traditions like Dashavatara, Gondhal, and Tamasha plays are believed to have ancient origins.
Marathi theatre's modern era began in 1843 when Vishnudas Bhave staged 'Sita Swayamvar' in Sangli, marking a turning point for performing arts in the Indian subcontinent. This event initiated a tradition that would establish Marathi theatre as a beacon of innovation in the minds of art enthusiasts.
