MMRDA Begins Garib Nagar Rehabilitation, Issues Possession Letters to 94 Families

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun rehabilitating 100 eligible families from Garib Nagar slum in Bandra East, issuing possession letters to 94 beneficiaries on October 1. The remaining six families are expected to receive their letters shortly. The rehabilitation follows Western Railway's removal of around 500 encroachments from the area in May for Bandra Terminus expansion.
Of the 100 eligible families identified through verification and judicial process, 16 are being accommodated at the HDIL Kurla project while 84 will move to the Bhandari Metallurgy project. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee oversaw the possession letter distribution through MMRDA's computerised flat-allotment centre and e-rehabilitation system.
The rehabilitation process had faced delays over occupancy certificates for the rehabilitation buildings, but the authority is now moving forward with family resettlement.
