Mumbai CNG Price Hits ₹89 Per Kg After ₹8 Hike Since April; Auto Fares Under Pressure

CNG prices in Mumbai reached ₹89 per kg on October 1 following a ₹1 per kg hike, the latest in a series of five increases totalling ₹8 since April. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) attributed the rise to higher input gas costs, particularly imported liquefied natural gas (RLNG) linked to international gas indices.
Autorickshaw and taxi operators face mounting pressure on operating costs. An auto-rickshaw union president said the latest hike adds approximately 3.9 paise per kilometre to costs, with cumulative burden around 12 paise per kilometre. If CNG prices trigger a 25 per cent rise in overall operating costs, unions may seek a fare revision within six months.
Commuters remain affected as CNG powers much of Mumbai's autorickshaw, taxi and commercial vehicle fleet. The repeated price hikes since April have significantly impacted transport economics across the city.
