Mumbai luxury flat's 'vegetarians only' rule sparks housing discrimination row

A real estate listing for a ₹6.5 crore apartment in Tardeo, South Mumbai, has triggered a debate over housing discrimination after a property dealer shared a video highlighting that the building restricts residence to vegetarians only. The 900 sq ft flat features a balcony with sea views and parking space.
The listing has drawn widespread criticism on social media, with users questioning whether dietary preferences should determine housing eligibility. Several political leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, were tagged by users seeking action on the alleged restriction. Shinde Sena youth leader Gurjyot Singh Keer also criticised the exclusionary condition.
The controversy reflects ongoing concerns in Mumbai's real estate sector over housing societies imposing restrictions based on food habits, community, or other personal preferences, raising questions about fair access to property.
