Mumbai Mechanic Battles ₹31.80 Crore GST Notice After Identity Misuse Allegations

A mobile repair mechanic from Cotton Green in Mumbai has filed a complaint with the Economic Offences Wing after receiving a GST and Income Tax notice for alleged dues of around ₹31.80 crore. Mahendra Mhapankar claims his identity and documents were misused to establish a company and conduct unauthorized financial transactions.
According to the complaint, Mhapankar became acquainted with Sanjay Tambe while both worked as BMC Clean-Up Marshals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tambe allegedly collected his documents under the pretext of starting a joint business, which were subsequently used to open a bank account and establish Galaxy Traders in Mhapankar's name.
An FIR has been registered at Kalachowki Police Station against Tambe, his associate Subhan Qureshi, and others under sections 406, 420, 120(B) and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation has been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing.
