Mumbai Police Salary Scam Probe Expands; Crime Branch Takes Over ₹6.41-Crore Fraud Case

The Mumbai Police salary scam has escalated with the Crime Branch taking over the investigation into an alleged ₹6.41-crore embezzlement. Five officials—Administrative Officer Ramkishan Goswami, Nagesh Talwadekar, Vijaya Chavan, Head Clerk Ajay Rathod, and Senior Clerk Amol Meshram—have been booked for cheating the government, destruction of evidence, and criminal conspiracy. They allegedly posed 10 non-police individuals as police personnel and fraudulently routed salary payments to their bank accounts.
The irregularities emerged during data migration from the old Sevaarth payroll system to a new platform. Discrepancies detected in salary records for 2019 and 2020 prompted the investigation. However, police officials now suspect the fraud may extend beyond these years, potentially reaching back to when salaries were processed manually before the Sevaarth system was introduced.
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive audit of payroll records across all offices where the accused previously worked to determine the full scope of the alleged manipulation.
