Mumbai Woman's Organ Donation Helps Multiple Patients Despite Her Own Health Struggles

Mumbai recorded its 30th deceased organ donation of 2026 when the family of a 66-year-old woman agreed to donate her liver after she was declared brain dead at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central. In addition to the liver, her corneas, skin and bones were also donated to benefit multiple recipients, with allocation carried out as per state guidelines.
The woman had been suffering from chronic kidney disease and was on dialysis for the past year, alongside severe cardiac dysfunction, diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension. She was admitted to hospital after suffering an intracranial bleed. Despite her multiple health complications, doctors found her liver healthy and suitable for transplantation.
What made the donation particularly significant was that the woman herself was a potential transplant recipient due to end-stage kidney disease. Her family's decision to donate meant that someone who could have benefited from a kidney transplant became a life-saving donor instead, transforming a moment of loss into hope for others.
