Navi Mumbai Residents Worry Flight Expansion at NMIA Could Worsen Road Congestion

Navi Mumbai residents are concerned that a significant shift of international flights from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) could worsen traffic congestion across the city. The move of more than a third of Mumbai airport's international departures to NMIA has been put on hold following a stakeholders' meeting in Delhi, with the Centre asking Adani Airport Holdings to work on a fresh redevelopment roadmap.
Traffic police say they have not yet received official details on the daily or weekly flight capacity at NMIA. DCP Traffic Rahul Khade stated that once clarity is provided, necessary traffic management measures will be arranged. Residents worry that airport-bound taxis, private vehicles and buses could overflow from NMIA's immediate vicinity onto major arterial roads across Navi Mumbai and Panvel, affecting commuting at key junctions like Uran Phata and the T-Point.
These roads already handle local traffic, industrial vehicles and commuter movement, raising concerns about additional strain from airport operations.
