Thane RTO Penalizes 150 Out-of-State Vehicle Owners for Tax and Registration Violations

The Thane Regional Transport Office has launched an intensified inspection drive against unauthorized use of out-of-state vehicles in Maharashtra, issuing penalty notices to 150 vehicle owners. The campaign focuses on ensuring strict compliance with transport regulations, clearing outstanding vehicle tax dues, and verifying essential documentation.
Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, vehicles registered in one state must be re-registered in the host state if operated there for more than 12 months. Vehicle owners bringing out-of-state vehicles into Maharashtra are required to submit details to the local registration authority within seven days of arrival.
The enforcement drive, led by Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil, involves systematic identification of out-of-state registered vehicles operating regularly within the state. Inspection teams are verifying vehicle usage duration, assessing re-registration necessity, and checking payment of applicable road taxes under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax Act. Offenders are being penalized according to prevailing laws.
