Thane tribunal awards ₹5.17 lakh to agriculturist injured in MSRTC bus collision

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane awarded ₹5.17 lakh compensation with 9% annual interest to a 44-year-old agriculturist who suffered permanent disability in a collision with an MSRTC bus. The tribunal held the ST bus driver solely responsible for the accident and rejected the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's claim of contributory negligence by the motorcyclist.
The accident occurred on October 13, 2019, when the bus allegedly came from the opposite direction while overtaking a tempo and rammed the motorcycle. The claimant, Ananta Mahadu Vishe, and pillion rider Shripat Bhau Ubale sustained serious injuries. Ubale died the following day. Vishe was treated for facial swelling, mouth stiffness and advised six months' rest.
Kinhavali police had registered a case against the bus driver under the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act sections. The MSRTC had argued the motorcycle was travelling at high speed without lights or signals, but the tribunal rejected this defence.
